Principal and Founder

Thomas P. Schaffner is the principal and founder of Schaffner Communications, Inc., an award-winning consulting firm that provides strategic counsel and professional services to business organizations in the area of corporate communications. Founded in 1986, Schaffner Communications is based in Chicago.

Before launching Schaffner Communications, Tom Schaffner served as Director of Communications for the National Live Stock & Meat Board, a Chicago-based organization that conducted programs of research, education, advertising and promotion on behalf of the nation’s beef, pork and lamb industries. As Director of Communications, Schaffner was responsible for developing and implementing marketing communications programs to internal (trade) and external (consumer) audiences.

Prior to his tenure at the Meat Board, Schaffner was senior account executive at John Iltis Associates, a pubic relations and advertising firm in Chicago that served as the Midwest representative and agency-of-record for a wide range of motion picture and entertainment companies headquartered on the West Coast, including Universal Pictures, and Columbia Pictures. Schaffner was responsible for media relations, publicity and film promotion in 10 Midwest cities (including Chicago) on behalf of entertainment industry clients.

An award-winning communicator, Schaffner has authored numerous articles that have appeared in trade, business and consumer publications. He was the founder, publisher and editor of the nationally-recognized Chicago File, a monthly newsletter sent to former Chicagoans around the world from 1985 to 1991. Schaffner served as Director of Public Relations for the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association, a non-paid position, from 1978 until 2011.

Schaffner earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from the University of Kansas and a Master of Science degree in Journalism from Northwestern University.
